Resusci Anne Manikins are updated in accordance with ILCOR guidelines

New Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care were issued August 2000 by ILCOR (the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation). ILCOR member organizations are: American Heart Association (AHA), Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC), European Resuscitation Council (ERC), Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC), InterAmerican Heart Foundation (CLAR), New Zealand Resuscitation Council (NZRC) and Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa (RCSA).

The new ILCOR Guidelines have some modified BLS Sequence recommendations that affect CPR training manikins. The ventilation tidal volume for adults is modified to approximately 10 ml/kg, or 700 to 1000 ml (sufficient to make the chest rise clearly), and should be delivered over 2 seconds, instead of previous 800-1200 ml delivered over 1 to 2 seconds. When supplementary oxygen is provided, 6 to 7 ml/kg, or 400-600 ml, should be given. This change is introduced in order to reduce the risk of gastric inflation that frequently develops during mouth to mouth ventilation. Gastric inflation occurs when the pressure in the esophagus exceeds the lower esophageal sphincter opening pressure, causing the sphincter to open so that air delivered during rescue breaths enters the stomach instead of the lungs. What has Laerdal done to be in accordance with these new requirements?
In order to have our adult manikins in accordance with the new guidelines, Laerdal has implemented the following changes since April 2001:
The Resusci Anne Modular System Manikins have a new airway installed which is adjusted according to the new guidelines. Skillguide versions have one additional airway (400-600ml) included that has to be used when performing O2 enriched ventilation. For the SkillReporter versions O2 enriched ventilation will be taken care of by a software upgrade that allows the customer to easily change between normal and O2 enriched ventilation.

The following table describes the changes for the users of Resusci Anne manikins:

The Reprogramming Kit for SkillReporter Manikins includes both manikin and SkillReporter software for updating units in field and can be ordered using Cat.No. 315950. This update is needed to get correct feedback when introducing new airway. For more information contact your local Laerdal company or Laerdal dealer.

The new airway for Resusci Anne manikins (700-1000ml) can be ordered using Cat.No. :

  • 152250 Airway "Guidelines 2000" (pkg.24) [700-1000ml]

The airway to be used in Skillguide/Skillmeter manikins when performing O2 enriched ventilation can be ordered using Cat.No. :

  • 152600 Airway 400-600ml (pkg.24) [Skillguide/Skillmeter manikins only]

The old 800-1200ml airways (Cat.No. 152200 and 152201) are obsolete.

For Heartsim Interactive ACLS Training System ventilation parameters can easily be changed by the customer. These parameters can be changed either by entering the CPR-page (ref. help-function) or entering the PC-host file and "edit manikin parameters".
