The NLN Announces the Launch of the Simulation Innovation Resource Center
New website to be launched at the annual nursing conference!
San Jose, CA, June 10, 2008 – The National League for Nursing, with the support of Laerdal Medical Corporation, announces the launch of their new on-line community to assist with faculty education in simulation methods. The Simulation Innovation and Resource Center (SIRC) will provide resources to nurse educators to learn how to design and integrate effective simulations into their curricula.
The NLN will be demonstrating this new website at the 12th International Nursing Learning Resource Centers Conference being held in San Jose, California, June 11 – 14.
The website enables nurse educators from around the world to learn how to use simulation to assist in the education of student learning, as well as dialogue with simulation experts and one another. The site can be accessed by simply logging on to the SIRC at http://sirc.nln.org.
Nine experts in nursing education and simulation were selected to develop the innovative web-based courses that deliver content through video clips of simulation scenarios and interactive activities. The development team represents varying types of programs and addresses a broad range of nursing education needs related to development and implementation of simulation. All of the funds from the development purchase of these courses will be reinvested in the maintenance of the SIRC and development of new courses.
A key to the success of the SIRC will be the opportunity it provides educators to engage in dialogue with experts and peers on such topics as curriculum integration, tips for creating and implementing simulations, and conducting nursing education research. Another element of the web-based resource center will be a comprehensive bibliography of articles related to simulations.
"This latest NLN collaboration with Laerdal Medical, enabling nurse educators to develop expertise in simulation education methodologies, is a valuable contribution to our faculty development efforts and upgrades the standards in nursing education to account for state-of-the-art technology," said NLN CEO Dr. Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN.
Pamela R. Jeffries, DNS, RN, FAAN, project director for an earlier NLN-Laerdal study involving simulation is the director for the project; Marcella T. Hovancsek, MSN, RN, serves as assistant project director. Dr. Mary Anne Rizzolo, Senior Director of Professional Development at the NLN, provides oversight.
This project comes on the heels of the three-year funding by Laerdal of a NLN research project which resulted in the published textbook Simulation in Nursing Education: From Conceptualization to Evaluation. Copies can be purchased from Laerdal at www.laerdal.com or by calling 877-LAERDAL (523-7325). A summary of the research project can also be found on the NLN website.
