NLN and Laerdal Announce New Web-Based Course Offerings

Through the Simulation Innovation Resource Center (SIRC)

Six Additional Courses Premiere at the National League for Nursing Education Summit

San Antonio, TX, September 10, 2008 – The National League for Nursing and Laerdal Medical Corporation are pleased to announce the creation of six new courses available on the innovative on-line community that’s been set up to facilitate faculty education in simulation methods. With this broadening of the simulation education curriculum, Laerdal and NLN now offer a total of nine online courses through the Simulation Innovation and Resource Center (SIRC).

Laerdal will hold a demonstration of the website, which may be accessed at http://sirc.nln.org, during the NLN’s 2008 Education Summit in San Antonio, TX, Wednesday, September 17 -Saturday, September 20.

The SIRC provides resources to nurse educators who want to learn how to design and integrate effective simulations into their curricula. The website also provides a global forum for nurse educators to exchange ideas with one another and dialogue with simulation experts. Among the topics covered are curriculum integration, tips for creating and implementing simulations, and conducting nursing education research. A comprehensive bibliography of articles related to simulation is another valuable element of the web-based resource center.

Nine experts in nursing education and simulation from a variety of nursing programs across the US had been selected to develop the course content, delivered through video clips of simulation scenarios and interactive activities. The courses address a broad range of nursing education needs related to development and implementation of simulation. All funds raised from the purchase of these courses will be reinvested in the maintenance of SIRC, as well as seed the creation of additional new courses.

“With this latest collaboration, empowering nurse educators to develop expertise in simulation education methodologies, the NLN and Laerdal Medical have raised the bar in nursing education to incorporate state-of-the-art technology,” said NLN CEO Dr. Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN. “The SIRC will undoubtedly make an invaluable contribution to our joint faculty development efforts, resulting in a nursing workforce better prepared to meet the needs of patients in a dynamic, diverse 21st-century health care environment.”

Pamela R. Jeffries, DNS, RN, FAAN, project director of an earlier NLN-Laerdal study involving simulation is the director for this project as well; Marcella T. Hovancsek, MSN, RN, serves as assistant project director. Dr. Mary Anne Rizzolo, interim chief program officer at the NLN, provides oversight.

This project comes on the heels of the three-year funding by Laerdal of an NLN research project which resulted in the book Simulation in Nursing Education: From Conceptualization to Evaluation. Copies may be purchased from Laerdal at www.laerdal.com or by calling 877-LAERDAL (523-7325). A summary of the research project can also be found on the NLN website: www.nln.org.
