Auto Mode

Patient safety and outcome are critically dependent on the competence of healthcare personnel.

Building real competence is a step-by-step process. It includes acquiring new knowledge and skills, getting used to making quick and safe decisions, training realistically in teams, and gaining clinical experience.

Maintaining and increasing competence is an ongoing process. Laerdal has been offering learning products responding to evolving needs in emergency medicine ever since its introduction of the Resusci Anne CPR Manikin in 1960.

Today, Laerdal's range of life saving learning products include graphic source materials, innovative skills trainers, interactive computer simulators and advanced patient simulators. This reflects our belief that helping build competence is a critical part of our mission of helping save lives.

If you are looking to run cases with a high degree of accuracy and want to spend less time interacting with software, and more time teaching, Laerdal Patient Cases are the perfect solution. These patient cases utilize SimMan 3G Auto Mode programming to combine physiological and pharmacological models, pre-programmed Patient Cases and methods for managing model-based simulation.

How Will Patient Cases Benefit Me?

Easy to Use!

  • Auto Mode is the easiest, most automatic way to conduct a simulation, freeing you and other faculty from needing to have a high level of technical knowledge, thereby decreasing the time you need to get up and running.
  • Do you face challenges with the level of clinical knowledge of your faculty? Run accurate Patient Cases with validated SimMan 3G physiological models.

Easy to Run and Manipulate!

  • The graphical user interface (GUI) for 3G Auto Mode is new, and its intuitive design makes it easy to operate.
  • Patient cases can be manipulated simply by using sliders and buttons.

How do I choose between Instructor Mode Scenarios for SimMan 3G versus Auto Mode Patient Cases for SimMan 3G?

What is your Use Model? How do you run simulations today?

Auto Mode Patient Cases uses physiological models and patient cases to automatically control the simulation. The graphical user interface (GUI) for 3G Auto Mode is new, and its intuitive design makes it easy for users to operate the SimMan 3G in Auto Mode or Instructor Mode.

Auto Mode is the easiest, most automatic way to run a simulation.

  • Patient Cases offer the most automatic way for you to conduct simulations.
  • Because of the models, the manikin’s response is always up-to-date and reflects the correct clinical signs in the manikin and monitor.
  • Many interventions, including drugs, are automatically detected and incorporated into the models, generating the appropriate response in the manikin and monitor and requiring less instructor interaction with the software, freeing you to focus more on your learners.
  • You can easily change the level of complexity of a case while it is in progress by using the sliders to make it easier or more difficult for the learners.
  • Organizations who wish to bridge the technical gaps that exist with their staff and faculty can do so by using Patient Cases. This is particularly valuable when running simulations with learners at varying levels of competency.
  • Patient Cases have been validated by industry content experts.

Instructor Mode Scenarios provide flexibility. You can easily run a simulation “on the fly,” write a scenario using Laerdal’s Scenario Editor, and run a scenario similar to how you do now with SimMan scenarios.

  • If you are familiar with using Pre-programmed scenarios with SimMan, you will feel confident and comfortable operating your SimMan 3G in a similar way.
  • You can import/continue to use their self-programmed SimMan Scenarios.
  • You are able to adjust certain individual parameters during a scenario.
  • Trends and Handlers used in pre-programmed scenarios can be used to automate the simulation.

Customers who need to edit the scenario content and who prefer full control will prefer using pre-programmed scenarios. Customers who wish to be able to edit the curriculum presented in Laerdal’s pre-programmed scenarios to suit their local protocols, or make changes to the scenario while it is in progress (beyond the flexibility offered by the sliders in a Patient Case), will prefer to use pre-programmed scenarios rather than Patient Cases.

Instructor Mode can be viewed on the GUI screen in two ways:

SimMan 3G Instructor Mode “Classic View”  is based on the SimMan user interface to make the transition from SimMan to SimMan 3G as simple as possible for you. It is the easiest way for existing customers who are experienced and confident using SimMan to run SimMan 3G "on the fly" and run scenarios.

SimMan 3G Instructor Mode “ 3G View” is based on the Auto Mode user interface. This is the easiest way for new users who have not used SimMan to learn the SimMan 3G user interface. You will find it easy to switch between “3G View” and running auto mode patient cases, as the interface is the same.
