Helping Babies Breathe
A hands-on newborn resuscitation training program by the American Academy of Pediatrics, based on the latest WHO guidelines. HBB was updated in 2017.
Features
HBB is part of the evidence-based suite of training program called Helping Babies Survive. HBB Second Edition is currently available in English*. The second edition focuses on quality of care and uses the latest scientific updates. It harmonizes with the 2015 ILCOR guidelines as well as the 2012 WHO Basic Newborn Resuscitation Guidelines.
This program, when well implemented, has proven to reduce neonatal mortality by 50%. Read more here.

Action Plan Wall Poster
A simple, pictorial, step-by-step wall chart for neonatal resuscitation.
Reprocessing Poster (only available for HBB Second Edition)
A simple, pictorial wall poster outlining how to correctly disasemble, clean and disinfect neonatal resuscitation equipment.
Facilitator Flip Chart
An educational tool to assist and guide HBB instructors to train healthcare providers to help babies breathe at birth.
Provider Guide
An educational guide and quality improvement tool for healthcare providers to help babies breathe at birth, to be used both during the training and in the facility.
*HBB Second Edition is available in English and will soon be available in French. HBB first edition is available in Spanish and Swahili. The materials are available in African, Asian and International graphics.
If you want to hold an HBB training, you need the HBB curriculum and the following:
- NeoNatalie Newborn Simulator Complete kit which comes with NeoNatalie Bag-Mask or Upright Bag-Mask,
- Penguin Newborn Suction and stethoscope.

Evidence
Helping Babies Breathe - Lessons learned guiding the way forward (A 5 year report fromt eh HBB Global Development Alliance)
On-site, brief and frequent HBB simulation training appears to facilitate transfer of new knowledge and skills into clinical practice and to be accompanied by a decrease in neonatal mortality. (Reference, 2015)
- Increased number of stimulated neonates: 12.5% to 16.3% (p = 0.016)
- Neonates receiving BMV decreased: 7.3% to 5.9% (p = 0.005)
- Mortality at 24h decreased: 11.1/1000 to 7.2/1000 (p = 0.040)
HBB implementation was associated with a significant reduction in both early neonatal deaths within 24 hours (47% reduction) and rates of FSB (24% reduction). (Reference, 2013)
- HBB uses a basic intervention approach readily applicable at all deliveries.
- These findings should serve as a call to action for other resource-limited countries striving to meet Millennium Development Goal 4.
