Fidelity 101: Realism by Degree
Physical Fidelity
The extent to which the physical properties (sensory characteristics, personnel, and equipment) of the operational task environment are recreated
Functional Fidelity
The degree to which the action the simulation system initiates matches its real-world counterpart. Functional fidelity can be impacted by whether or not a simulation is passive, active, or interactive
Psychological Fidelity
The extent to which trainees engage in tasks that generate experience, action, and processing demands that are similar to the operational environment, such as stress.
