California Simulation Alliance, a program of HealthImpact

The California Simulation Alliance is a leader in faculty development for simulation educators, having trained over 2,500 simulation faculty. CSA courses have an interprofessional focus and are designed for all levels. Following principles of adult learning, all courses are interactive and immersive in nature and support transition of the learner from novice to expert. CSA courses provide a completely integrated solution to facilities seeking faculty development support.

 

California Simulation Alliance Course Offerings

Level 1 (Foundations)

This 2-day Health Impact course is designed to engage the participant with an interest in simulation-based healthcare training with the basic concepts of simulation as an educational strategy.  Using a combination of didactic, interactive and immersive group work, the course provides the beginning simulation user the basics of high fidelity simulation, scenario development, debriefing strategies to facilitate learning, and the effective use of available technology.

Scenario Development

In this 1-day HealthImpact immersive workshop, the participant will construct a beginning scenario for immediate application in their work environment. Utilizing a basic storyboard, the participant will sketch the learning objectives, critical learner actions and a case flow with debriefing points. This streamlined step-wise approach to scenario development and validation facilitates the implementation of consistent, evidence-based scenarios. Each participant or team will leave with one completed scenario. The scenario will need to be validated and tested after the workshop unless time permits that day.

Debriefing

In this 1-day HealthImpact immersive workshop, the participant will have the opportunity to apply debriefing strategies in common situations. Following a brief didactic grounding, an opportunity to practice and receive feedback is provided through the use video clips and role-playing to build beginning competency in debriefing.

Advanced Debriefing

In this immersive 1-day HealthImpact workshop, the participant will build on skills learned in basic debriefing courses. Employing the experiential learning framework and utilizing a series of video clips and “live” simulation experiences depicting common debriefing challenges, the participant will practice and receive feedback to expand competency in debriefing.

Moulage

In this 1-day “hands-on” workshop, the participant will examine the value of using moulage in simulation to enhance realism and more effectively engage learners. Participants will further create moulage using recipes and methods provided in the class for direct application to the work setting.

Standardized Patient

In this 1-day "hands-on" HealthImpact workshop, the participant will be provided with the tools and skills they need to work with standardized patients, and to incorporate the program into their existing program.

Train The Trainer

This 3-day program is designed for the client's simulation designee(s) to be trained as a CSA faculty trainer in one course. This would occur after the designee has attended the course as a participant/mentee.  After the training, the designee would be authorized to deliver that content to their internal stakeholders using the CSA curriculum. At the conclusion the CSA Instructor Training Manual will be provided.

Business Planning

This hands-on HealthImpact workshop will provide the participant with the tools and skills they need to write and present a business case for simulation. Throughout the workshop, participants will build their case and their budget for simulation and leave the workshop with a draft business plan.

Policy and Procedure Manual Consultation

HealthImpact will work with the client to compile a comprehensive policy and procedure manual that is in alignment with both INACSL and SSH standards.

Strategy and Sustainability Planning

In this 2-day HealthImpact immersive workshop, a consultative approach will be used to help develop an overall simulation educational strategy for the institution. Discussion will include steps to accreditation, marketing, fund raising and PR.  Health Impact will review the current business plan or help create one, if needed, provide suggestions on ways to keep the simulation program sustainable and analyze ways to quantify the ROI and maximize the current budget. Workshop concludes with a report of findings and recommendations.

Curriculum Integration

This 1-day HealthImpact immersive workshop will delve into the program curriculum, identifying areas in which simulation would be most useful and develop an action plan for integration.  A review of current clinical experiences will be conducted to ascertain whether simulation can be substituted to meet the program and course goals. Workshop concludes with a report of recommendations and guidelines for integration.
