SimBegin
Enhance Simulation Competence
Blended Learning Training for Educators
Prepare to deliver simulation excellence
Adverse events can happen at any time, anywhere.
Delivering the right care is essential. Simulation-based training is vitally important to improving the quality of patient care.
Developed as a collaboration between the SAFER Simulation Centre and Laerdal Medical, SimBegin is a blended learning simulation facilitator course that aims to build competence and confidence in planning, conducting, and debriefing a simulation scenario.
Ideally suited for educators and trainers who are new to simulation-based education this course sets out to deliver a practical, digitally enabled solution so organizations can quickly be on their way to implementing quality simulation training.

The SimBegin Curriculum
SimBegin requires a class size of six (6) participants. The course utilizes self-directed e-learning and online workshops adaptable to fit any learner’s time schedule. Consisting of three modules, this entry level instruction allows medical, nursing, and paramedical professionals learn the basics of simulation in healthcare and debriefing.
Module 1: E-learning - Simulation Methodology
This module is entirely self-directed and introduces:
- Medical Simulation
- Patient Safety
- Circle of Learning
Estimated time: 2-3 hours
Module 2: Online workshops - Briefing and Debriefing
This module combines self-directed e-learning with immersive online workshops with a simulation expert:
- How to deliver high-quality and structured pre-briefing
- How to utilize structured CORE debriefing
Estimated time: 3 workshops with duration of 2-3 hours each
Module 3: Instructor-led workshops - Implementation
This module combines self-directed e-learning with practical simulation scenarios:
- Best practice sample videos and facilitator resources
- Plan, brief and debrief scenarios
- Plan implementation of simulation training in own organization
Estimated time: 1 full training day
SimBegin Mentoring Program
A mentoring program can be added to the initial SimBegin course. Mentoring provides a guided process where the facilitators develop their skills and the quality of their simulations. The mentoring program is based on SAFER's experiences focusing on areas critical to success for simulation-based training.
These factors include:
- practicing and refining skills
- sharing experiences with peers
- receiving feedback
The mentoring program consists of 4 workshops and mentoring meetings provided over 16 hours with time between each workshop that allows learners to practice their simulation skills.
Workshops include:
Running Pre-written Scenarios
Skills and Methodology
Decision Making
Continous Quality Improvement
