Standardized/Simulated Patients-Scenario Instit

This course is designed to help faculty develop the knowledge and skills necessary to more fully utilize standardized/simulated patients (SPs) within their curriculum for teaching and evaluation.

1. Describe how standardized/simulated patients (SPs) may be used in simulation-based health care education.
2. Review the evidence on effective use of SPs in nursing and health care education and evaluation.
3. Create a plan to incorporate SPs into your curriculum.
4. Discuss the challenges of using SPs.
5. Identify problem-solving options used to overcome challenges.

Andrea Parsons Schram, DNP, CRNP, is an associate professor of nursing at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, where she has been using standardized patients in undergraduate and graduate nursing courses for both teaching and evaluation. Andrea has participated in state and national programs to increase the use of simulation in nursing education.

Cate Nicholas, EdD, MS, PA, is the director of Simulation Education at the Fletcher Allen Health Care/University of Vermont College of Medicine Clinical Simulation Laboratory at the University of Vermont. She is an assistant professor in Family Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Cate started the Standardized Patient Program at the University of Vermont in 1995. She is active at the regional, national and international level with the Association of Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE), using the standardized patient methodology for learning, assessment and research across the continuum of health care education.
